US removes B-1 bombers from UK base over security threat

The B-1 Lancer bombers have been relocated from their UK station as a precautionary measure, according to defence officials familiar with the operation. The decision follows heightened security assessments at the base, which serves as a key NATO facility in Europe.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that authorities have "strong indications" suggesting Iranian involvement in the alleged plot against the base. While specific details of the threat remain classified, the assessment prompted rapid coordination between American and British defence officials to safeguard personnel and assets.

The relocation of the strategic aircraft underscores ongoing tensions in the region and reflects growing security concerns among Western military establishments. Both governments have maintained close coordination on intelligence matters and have not ruled out additional protective measures if circumstances warrant.

The B-1 Lancer is a long-range, swing-wing bomber that plays a critical role in US military operations across Europe and the Middle East. Its temporary removal does not represent a broader withdrawal of American military presence from the region, defence sources indicated.
