Nirav Sheth, a Republican candidate running in the US midterm elections, has stepped up calls for stricter regulation of the H-1B visa programme, highlighting how unscrupulous firms exploit the system for improper gains.

Sheth, whose family has roots in India, argued that the current immigration framework requires substantial overhaul to ensure it serves its intended purpose of attracting genuine talent to the United States. "The immigration system needs to be reformed in a proper way, so that the US can be friendlier for the people who actually want to contribute to the economy," Sheth said, emphasizing the distinction between legitimate skilled professionals and exploitative practices by fraudulent operators.

The H-1B visa programme, which allows US employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty occupations, has long been a subject of political debate. Critics argue that certain labour placement agencies have misused the visa category to undercut wages and working conditions, while proponents contend it fills genuine skills gaps in the American workforce.

Sheth's intervention comes as immigration remains a contentious issue in US electoral politics, particularly among Republican constituencies. His candidacy reflects a segment within the party seeking to distinguish between regulated immigration that benefits the economy and irregular practices that undermine worker protections and fair competition.
