The United States has positioned itself for substantial leverage in Venezuela's oil sector through a new agreement that grants Washington first refusal rights on the majority of crude production and oversight powers over operational decisions.
Under the terms being pursued, the US will have the right to purchase 80 per cent of oil produced by the private operator managing the Venezuelan venture, effectively controlling the distribution of a major revenue stream from the country's extensive hydrocarbon reserves.
Beyond procurement rights, the arrangement includes veto power over board appointments, allowing the US to influence management decisions at a critical juncture for Venezuela's struggling energy sector. The move represents an attempt to assert American interests in Venezuela's economic recovery and petroleum output as the country navigates ongoing political and economic challenges.
The deal reflects broader US strategic interests in Western Hemisphere energy security and comes amid international efforts to stabilise Venezuela's oil production capacity, which has declined significantly in recent years due to sanctions, lack of investment, and operational challenges.
