US State Department rebrands AI as 'Super Intelligence' following Trump directive

The State Department's Bureau of International Organization Affairs has issued a directive requiring staff to adopt the term 'super intelligence' in place of 'artificial intelligence' across all documents, remarks, and press materials. The instruction came via email on Tuesday from Michael Drager, deputy assistant secretary of state for the bureau, which oversees US diplomatic missions to the United Nations and multilateral organisations worldwide.

The email, titled 'Change in Nomenclature AI to SI,' directed employees to update all references to the technology going forward. 'Following the president's remarks at the GA today, please change all references of Artificial Intelligence to Super Intelligence in our documents and positions. We will be using SI in all remarks, positions and press elements moving forward,' the message stated.

President Trump introduced the rebranded terminology during his address to the UN General Assembly this week as part of an apparent effort to reshape how the technology is publicly discussed. The move reflects the administration's broader communications strategy on artificial intelligence policy.

It remained unclear on Wednesday whether other State Department bureaus planned to implement the same nomenclature change or if the directive would extend beyond the international organisations division. The rebrand represents a notable shift in official US diplomatic language surrounding one of the world's most significant emerging technologies.
