The US Supreme Court on Monday issued an emergency order permitting the White House to continue construction on the USD 400 million ballroom project, overturning a lower court's halt to the work. The decision came as a significant victory for President Donald Trump, enabling him to move forward with the high-profile initiative while multiple lawsuits proceed through the courts.
Chief Justice John Roberts publicly dissented from the majority order, aligning with the court's three liberal-leaning justices, who characterized the construction as "likely unlawful." Roberts had previously issued a temporary order earlier in the day to maintain the status quo pending the court's decision. However, the full court majority ultimately sided with the Trump administration, finding that a preservation group challenging the project likely lacked the legal standing to do so.
The Supreme Court's order does not address the underlying legality of the ballroom project itself, leaving that question to be resolved in lower courts. However, internal Trump administration documents indicate that key portions of the construction could be completed within months—a timeline far shorter than the years typically required to resolve such complex litigation.
The Trump administration had petitioned the justices for emergency intervention after federal courts moved to block the work. With the Supreme Court's decision now allowing construction to proceed, the ballroom project represents another instance of the administration's assertion of broad executive authority in reshaping the nation's capital.
