US suspends Russian diesel sanctions through April 2027 following Trump-Putin talks

The US Department of Treasury authorised the suspension of sanctions on Russian diesel imports on Friday, permitting transactions related to the sale, delivery, and importation of Russian Federation-origin diesel fuel through April 7, 2027. The announcement followed a telephone conversation between Trump and Putin, in which the two leaders discussed energy supplies.
According to Trump, Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to American and global markets, with an additional 500,000 tons scheduled for November. The Russian government has committed to delivering one million tons immediately thereafter, followed by up to 3 million tons in subsequent shipments, subject to the operational status of Russia's refineries.
The suspension of sanctions comes as diesel prices have faced upward pressure globally. The move represents a significant shift in US policy towards Russian energy exports, which have faced restrictions since 2022. The authorisation specifically permits all transactions previously prohibited under the Russian Harmful Foreign Activities Sanctions Regulations relating to Russian diesel imports.
The decision reflects an attempt to address energy market volatility by tapping into Russian supply capacity. Global diesel markets have experienced supply constraints, and the agreement signals a willingness by the Trump administration to engage with Moscow on energy matters despite broader geopolitical tensions.
