The United States will expand social media screening for visa applicants in select categories starting October 1, marking a significant shift in consular procedures. The move affects holders of specialized work visas including the I, TN and TD categories.

The US State Department has announced enhanced social media vetting procedures that will take effect from October 1 for applicants seeking specialized visa categories. The expanded screening will apply to individuals applying for or renewing I visas, which are typically granted to certain foreign media representatives and information media representatives, as well as TN and TD visa holders, temporary worker categories used predominantly by professionals from North American countries.
Under the new protocol, consular officers will conduct more thorough examinations of applicants' social media profiles and online presence. The screening aims to identify potential security risks and verify information provided during the application process. Officials say the measure is part of broader efforts to strengthen vetting procedures across the US visa system.
The move represents an expansion of social media checks that have been selectively applied to other visa categories in recent years. Previous screening initiatives have focused on immigrant visas and certain nonimmigrant categories where security concerns were deemed higher.
Applicants are advised to review their social media accounts and ensure consistency between information submitted in official documents and their online presence. The State Department has indicated that applicants will be informed of any specific concerns raised during the social media review process, allowing them an opportunity to respond.
