US to vote on blocking Chinese telecom firms from domestic phone networks

The Federal Communications Commission announced Thursday that it will vote November 19 on a regulatory proposal designed to prevent Chinese telecommunications carriers from obtaining direct access to US phone numbers and related routing resources. The measure targets major state-owned operators including China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, as well as other IP-enabled service providers based in China.

The FCC's initiative represents an escalation in US regulatory scrutiny of Chinese telecom entities operating within American jurisdictions. Officials have expressed concern that direct access to phone numbering systems could potentially enable espionage, data interception, or other security threats to critical communications infrastructure.

The proposal would effectively restrict how Chinese carriers route calls and manage telecommunications traffic involving US-based customers and networks. Industry analysts note the move aligns with broader US government efforts to limit Chinese technology companies' influence over sensitive American infrastructure.

If approved, the measure would require Chinese carriers to route all US-bound communications through approved third-party intermediaries rather than maintaining direct connections to the North American Numbering Plan. The vote on November 19 is expected to determine whether the FCC proceeds with formal rulemaking on the restrictions.
