US Treasury targets Indian, Turkish entities over Iran sanctions evasion

The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control announced penalties against Indian and Turkish entities accused of orchestrating a complex sanctions evasion network benefiting Iran's petroleum sector. According to the agency, an Indian couple operating shipping-related businesses created false vessel registries using the flags of countries including Guyana and Laos to mask the true ownership and destination of Iranian tankers navigating international waters.

The scheme allowed Iranian crude oil and petroleum products to reach international markets while circumventing American sanctions imposed on Tehran's energy exports. By registering vessels under the names of nations with less stringent oversight, the network obscured the connection between Iranian suppliers and foreign buyers, complicating efforts by maritime authorities to monitor illicit cargo movements.

Turkish companies allegedly participated in the operation by providing logistical support and facilitating transactions that enabled the flow of Iranian oil through global shipping lanes. The designations freeze any assets held by the sanctioned entities within US jurisdiction and effectively bar American entities from conducting business with them.

The action reflects continued US efforts to enforce maximum pressure policies against Iran's economy, particularly targeting maritime commerce routes used to export crude oil. Intelligence agencies have increasingly focused on transnational shipping networks that employ false flag operations and corporate obfuscation to evade international sanctions regimes.
