US Vice President Demands Iran Scale Back Nuclear Enrichment Program
JD Vance questions Iran's need for high-level uranium enrichment as US pressure on Tehran's nuclear programme intensifies amid broader regional tensions.

United States Vice President JD Vance has called on Iran to reduce its nuclear enrichment activities, specifically questioning the rationale behind the country's production of 60% enriched uranium. The remarks underscore escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran's atomic programme, a longstanding point of friction in regional diplomacy.
Vance's challenge to Iran centres on the civilian versus military applications of enriched uranium. While Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is exclusively for peaceful energy purposes, Western nations and the US have expressed concerns that high enrichment levels bring Tehran closer to weapons-grade material capable of being used in nuclear weapons.
The enrichment threshold of 60% has become a focal point in international nuclear negotiations. Under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which the US withdrew from in 2018, Iran was restricted to 3.65% enrichment. Since then, Iran has significantly expanded its enrichment capacity, citing the US withdrawal and subsequent sanctions as justification.
The Biden-Harris administration had sought to revive negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme, but progress has been limited. Vance's public demand signals the incoming Trump administration may take a harder line on Iran's atomic activities, potentially complicating diplomatic efforts in the region.
