Used car sales surge as new vehicle prices push buyers to second-hand market

India's used car market is experiencing unprecedented demand as escalating prices in the new vehicle segment continue to redirect buyers toward pre-owned alternatives. The trend accelerated during the festive period, with dealers reporting sales of one vehicle every 41 seconds at peak times.

According to data from online used car platform Spinny, deliveries on the first day of Navratri this year surged 96 percent compared to the corresponding period last year. The spike reflects growing consumer preference for second-hand vehicles as a cost-effective option amid persistent price inflation in the new car segment.

Industry analysts attribute the shift to a combination of factors: new vehicle prices have reached levels that exclude a significant portion of potential buyers, while the quality and reliability of pre-owned cars have improved substantially. The festive season, traditionally a peak period for vehicle purchases in India, amplified the demand dynamics this year.

The surge in used car sales underscores structural changes in India's automotive market, where affordability concerns are reshaping purchasing patterns. Second-hand vehicle dealers are capitalizing on this trend, with organized platforms expanding their operations to meet growing consumer demand across major metropolitan areas.
