Usha Mangeshkar to receive inaugural Bhupen Hazarika National Award

Usha Mangeshkar will receive the inaugural Bhupen Hazarika National Award in recognition of her contributions to Indian music and cinema, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will present the award at the concluding ceremony of Bhupen Hazarika's year-long birth centenary celebrations scheduled for November 29 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, according to the Chief Minister.

The Bhupen Hazarika National Award has been established to honour distinguished contributions to music and cultural arts. Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary Assamese singer, composer and filmmaker, remains an iconic figure in Indian popular culture, having achieved prominence across multiple media including films, stage performances and recordings.

Mangeshkar's selection for the inaugural award underscores the recognition of her artistic legacy spanning several decades of playback singing in Indian cinema. The honour reflects the government's commitment to celebrating prominent figures in India's cultural heritage.

The birth centenary celebrations of Bhupen Hazarika, who was born in 1926, have been marked throughout the year with various cultural programmes and tributes across the country.
