The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh admitted on Tuesday that communications from his official social media handle had not met the expected standards of government conduct. The acknowledgment followed criticism from AAP leader Sanjay Singh, who highlighted discrepancies in the voter rolls for the state Legislative Council election.
Singh questioned how a voter name listed as 'Ramhit Yadav' had been altered to 'Ram ne Yadav ko Maara'—a phrase meaning 'Ram killed Yadav'—in official election documentation. The apparent clerical error or data entry mistake raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral roll.
When confronted with the issue, the CEO conceded that his responses lacked the professionalism and measured tone expected from an official government communication channel. He apologised for the 'sharpness' of his previous statements on social media.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about data management and quality control in electoral processes across Indian states. Election officials have come under increasing scrutiny regarding the accuracy of voter rolls and the handling of public inquiries about electoral procedures.
