The Uttar Pradesh administration has introduced a subsidised sugar distribution programme aimed at providing relief to consumers grappling with elevated commodity prices. Under the initiative, sugar will be made available at ₹52 per kilogram compared to prevailing market rates of ₹65 per kilogram, representing a discount of around ₹13 per kilogram.
The programme will commence operations in Lucknow, the state capital, where residents will have access to the reduced-price sugar through designated distribution channels. State authorities have indicated that successful implementation in the capital will pave the way for nationwide expansion across urban centres in Uttar Pradesh.
The move reflects growing concerns over inflation in essential food commodities affecting household budgets across North India. Sugar prices have remained volatile due to supply chain disruptions and market dynamics, prompting several state governments to explore price stabilisation measures.
Official sources indicate that the subsidised sugar scheme represents part of a broader government strategy to mitigate the impact of rising living costs on consumers. Details regarding the volume of supply, eligibility criteria, and timeline for expansion to other cities are expected to be clarified in coming days.
