Uttar Pradesh makes 'use by date' labelling compulsory for all sweets

Inspections conducted at sweet manufacturing units and retail outlets across Uttar Pradesh have exposed significant gaps in consumer protection, with many vendors failing to provide essential information about product freshness and shelf life. Regulatory authorities have now made it mandatory for all sweet manufacturers and sellers to display clear 'use by' dates and manufacturing dates on their products.

The decision comes after food safety officials discovered that a substantial number of sweet shops, including major retail chains, were not adequately informing consumers about when products were made or their recommended consumption period. This lack of transparency raised concerns about potential health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups consuming expired or deteriorated confectionery items.

Under the new directive, all sweet manufacturers must ensure their packaging clearly indicates the date of manufacture and the recommended consumption window. Retailers are similarly required to maintain proper records and display this information prominently at points of sale. The regulation applies to all types of sweets, whether packaged or sold loose from shops.

Food safety officials have indicated that inspections will be intensified to ensure compliance with the new labelling requirements. Non-compliance could result in penalties and action against violators under food safety regulations. The move is expected to encourage manufacturers to maintain stricter quality control measures and help consumers make informed purchasing decisions.
