Uttar Pradesh police end seven-hour standoff; suspect killed after taking children hostage

A tense seven-hour standoff in Azamgarh concluded with the death of a suspect who had taken three children hostage, according to accounts provided by senior police officials on Wednesday. The man, identified as Arvind Singh, initially resisted police efforts to secure the release of the children, treating them as human shields during negotiations.

According to Additional Director General Navin Arora, police personnel made repeated attempts to persuade Singh to release the children and surrender peacefully throughout the lengthy standoff. Singh refused to comply with these appeals, maintaining his position inside the room with the three minors.

As negotiations reached an impasse, Singh opened fire from inside the room. In response, police deployed non-lethal measures including stun grenades and tear gas to force entry into the premises. During the subsequent confrontation, Singh was struck by gunfire and sustained critical injuries.

The suspect was subsequently evacuated for medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances that prompted the initial hostage situation or Singh's motive for the incident.
