Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister announced the renaming of Bhadohi district to Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi on Friday, marking a significant administrative change in the state. The decision pays tribute to Sant Ravidas, the medieval saint and social reformer who championed equality and craftsmanship. Bhadohi, located in eastern Uttar Pradesh, has long been recognised as a major centre for carpet weaving and other traditional handicrafts.
According to the Chief Minister's statement, the renaming reflects the state's commitment to empowering local artisans and craftspeople. Historically, many skilled workers from the region have been forced to migrate in search of better employment opportunities. The administration believes the new name will serve as a symbol of recognition for these communities and their contributions to the state's cultural and economic heritage.
Sant Ravidas, revered across North India, is celebrated for his teachings on social equality and his own background as a cobbler and leather worker. His philosophy emphasised dignity in labour and rejection of caste-based discrimination. The renaming is expected to reinforce the region's cultural identity while creating a dedicated platform for local craftspeople to display and market their skills both domestically and internationally.
The decision comes as part of broader efforts by the Uttar Pradesh government to promote regional heritage and support traditional industries. Officials stated that the renaming would help attract investment and tourism to the district while strengthening the livelihoods of its artisan communities.
