Uttarakhand mandates Sunday weekly offs for madrassas, not Friday
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed madrassas in the state to observe Sunday as their weekly holiday instead of Friday, bringing them in line with standard school regulations. The directive applies to all madrassas recognised by the state education department.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that madrassas functioning within the state must follow the standard school calendar, which designates Sunday as the weekly day off rather than Friday.
Dhami justified the directive by emphasising that madrassas recognised and regulated by the state education department must adhere to the same administrative framework as other educational institutions. "Since madrassas function as schools recognised by the education department, its rules and regulations will apply to them as well," he stated.
The move brings institutional uniformity across the education sector in Uttarakhand. Educational institutions in India typically follow a Sunday weekly holiday as part of the standard school calendar framework overseen by state and central education authorities.
The directive affects all madrassas that hold official recognition from Uttarakhand's education department. The implementation of this policy underscores the government's approach to standardise administrative procedures across all recognised educational institutions regardless of their religious or community affiliation.
