Uttarakhand's Electoral Roll Shrinks By 800,000 Ahead Of Elections

Uttarakhand's final voter list has declined significantly from earlier counts, with the state's Chief Electoral Officer reporting a substantial reduction in registered electors. The contraction raises questions about voter verification procedures ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

The Chief Electoral Officer's office in Uttarakhand disclosed that the state's electoral roll has contracted by approximately 8 lakh (800,000) voters from its earlier enumeration. According to the CEO's statement, the electoral roll contained 79.6 lakh registered voters when the Special Intense Revision (SIR) commenced on June 8.

The significant decline between the preliminary and final voter counts represents a material reduction in the state's electorate. Electoral officials attributed the decrease to the verification and validation processes undertaken during the revision period, which typically involves cross-checking voter registrations against multiple data sources.

The contraction in voter numbers has sparked scrutiny among election observers and political analysts tracking the state's electoral preparations. Officials clarified that the revision process is standard procedure to ensure accuracy in voter rolls by removing duplicate entries, deceased voters, and those who have relocated outside their registered constituencies.

Uttar Pradesh's election commission emphasized that the revised electoral roll reflects the final, verified list of eligible voters for the state. The final figures are expected to serve as the basis for conducting elections in the state going forward, pending any further updates or corrections through routine maintenance procedures.
