Vaishnaw invites media editors to discuss data protection framework concerns

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday sought to address apprehensions within the media industry regarding the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, asserting that the government harbours no intention of restricting press freedom through the legislation.

The minister's remarks came as concerns have been raised by sections of the media about potential implications of the data protection framework. Vaishnaw sought to allay these worries by emphasising the government's commitment to safeguarding journalistic independence while implementing the privacy safeguards.

In a bid to bridge concerns, the minister called for open dialogue with editorial leadership across news organisations to better understand their reservations and address them constructively. The invitation reflects an effort to build consensus around the implementation of the DPDP Act, which has become increasingly significant as India strengthens its regulatory framework governing personal data.

The DPDP Act, which received presidential assent in August 2023, seeks to establish a comprehensive regime for data privacy protection. Industry stakeholders, including media houses, have sought clarity on how the framework's provisions would intersect with existing editorial practices and journalistic privilege.

The minister's outreach represents a potential opening for stakeholders to engage with the government on implementation details before the Act's provisions are operationalised across sectors.
