VALENCIA CITY, Bukidnon — Local health officials are closely monitoring a cluster of 73 suspected Hepatitis A cases, with the majority concentrated in Barangay Lurugan, a village situated amid extensive multinational pineapple plantations in the region.
The outbreak prompted the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to coordinate response efforts. City Health Officer Dr. Michael Escalante has been leading investigations into the source and scope of the outbreak affecting the agricultural community.
Hepatitis A, a viral infection transmitted through contaminated food and water, typically causes acute illness characterized by fever, jaundice, and abdominal discomfort. The concentration of cases in Barangay Lurugan has raised questions about sanitation and water supply standards in the area, particularly given its proximity to large agricultural operations.
Health authorities have begun contact tracing and are implementing preventive measures to contain further spread. Residents have been advised to practice proper hygiene and food safety protocols while investigations continue into the outbreak's origins and transmission routes.
