Valencia closes Mt. Talinis trails to restore ecosystem

DUMAGUETE CITY—The municipality of Valencia in Negros Oriental province will temporarily shut access roads to Mt. Talinis beginning November 1, seeking to rehabilitate the mountain's environment after sustained damage from human activity.

The closure was formalized through Executive Order No. 45, signed by Mayor Edgar Teves Jr., which directs the immediate suspension of trail operations on the popular climbing destination. Officials cited the need for ecosystem recovery as the primary reason for the measure, noting that rising numbers of hikers and visitors have strained the mountain's natural resources.

Mt. Talinis, a dormant volcano located in the province, attracts outdoor enthusiasts from across the region. Local authorities indicated the temporary restriction would provide time for environmental restoration efforts and allow vegetation and wildlife habitats to regenerate following months of intensive foot traffic.

The municipal government has not announced a specific timeline for reopening the trails, stating that access will be restored once environmental assessments determine the ecosystem has sufficiently recovered. Officials urged the public to comply with the closure order to support conservation efforts.
