Vande Bharat sleeper train to cut Bangalore-Mumbai journey to 16 hours

A new Vande Bharat sleeper train service between Bangalore and Mumbai is expected to commence operations later this month, marking a significant upgrade to rail connectivity between India's two major metropolitan centres. The express service will complete the 1,137-kilometre journey in approximately 16 hours, compared to the 22-24 hours currently required on conventional overnight trains operating on the same route.

The introduction of the sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat train family represents an expansion of Indian Railways' premium semi-high-speed service offerings. Passenger fares for the new service are expected to start at ₹3,000, positioning it as a competitive alternative to existing rail options between the cities. The time reduction of six to eight hours is expected to appeal to business and leisure travellers seeking faster connectivity without resorting to air travel.

The Vande Bharat sleeper will join the existing fleet of Vande Bharat express trains already operating on several Indian Railway routes. The sleeper configuration is designed to provide overnight travel comfort while maintaining the enhanced speed and modern amenities characteristic of the Vande Bharat series. The launch represents Indian Railways' continued investment in modernising its fleet and improving service quality on major intercity corridors.

The Bangalore-Mumbai corridor is one of India's busiest transport routes, connecting two key economic centres in South and West India. The new service is expected to ease congestion on existing train services while offering passengers a time-efficient travel option that bridges the gap between rail and aviation sectors.
