Vape industry seeks regulatory clarity following High Court nicotine ruling

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Organisation of Vape Entity (MOVE) has urged the government to establish comprehensive legal frameworks governing nicotine liquids following a recent High Court ruling that has created uncertainty in the sector.

The industry group said the court decision has highlighted gaps in Malaysia's regulatory approach to vaping products, leaving businesses and consumers in a state of ambiguity about the legal status of nicotine-containing liquids. MOVE representatives stressed that without clear guidelines, the sector faces continued operational challenges.

The call comes as Malaysia grapples with balancing public health concerns against the growth of the vaping industry. Current regulations have been inconsistent, with various interpretations of existing laws creating confusion among retailers and users.

MOVE has indicated it is prepared to work with relevant government agencies and health authorities to develop appropriate regulatory standards. The group argues that clearly defined rules would enable legitimate businesses to operate transparently while helping authorities better monitor product quality and safety standards across the market.
