Vedanta to pump $600 million into South African zinc expansion

Vedanta Resources has committed $600 million to significantly expand its zinc production operations in South Africa, doubling capacity across its subsidiary operations. The investment underscores the company's strategy to strengthen its position in one of the world's most important zinc-producing regions.

Through Hindustan Zinc Ltd, Vedanta aims to achieve an annual production target of 2 million tonnes, while its Vedanta Zinc International arm will contribute 1 million tonnes annually. Combined, these operations will substantially increase the conglomerate's global output and strengthen India's access to refined zinc supplies.

The South African expansion comes as demand for zinc remains robust across construction, automotive, and infrastructure sectors globally. India, as a major consumer of refined metals, stands to benefit from increased domestic availability through Vedanta's expanded production footprint.

This capital deployment reflects Vedanta's continued focus on scaling mining and metals operations across the African continent, where the company has established significant operational expertise. The expansion is expected to enhance the company's competitive standing in international zinc markets and support long-term shareholder value creation.
