Vellore Dam prepares for water release after canal clearing

The Water Resources Department (WRD) in Vellore has finished clearing silt from canals as preparation for the controlled release of water from Mordhana Dam, officials said. The maintenance work was undertaken to ensure smooth water flow once the discharge begins from the reservoir.

According to WRD officials, Mordhana Dam currently stores 235.03 million cubic feet (mcft) of water, approaching its total storage capacity of 261.3 mcft. The dam plays a crucial role in water management for the district, supplying irrigation and domestic water needs across the region.

The desilting operation forms part of routine maintenance protocols conducted before major water releases. Such preparatory measures help prevent blockages and ensure optimal distribution of water through the canal network to downstream areas and beneficiary villages.

The timing of the water release will depend on water demand and reservoir levels, WRD officials indicated. As the monsoon season progresses, the department continues to monitor rainfall patterns and water inflow to manage the dam's storage effectively.
