Vellore students study under trees as school building demolition leaves no classroom

Students of a Government Middle School in Vellore district are currently learning in makeshift conditions, sitting under tree shade as their institution lacks proper classroom infrastructure. The situation arose after school buildings were demolished in 2024 as part of a planned development project aimed at constructing new educational facilities.

The demolition of the existing structures was undertaken with assurances from district authorities that replacement buildings would be constructed to house the students and resume normal academic operations. However, the delay in completing the new construction has left the school functioning without adequate infrastructure, forcing educators to conduct classes in open areas with minimal protection from weather.

This arrangement has posed challenges for both teachers and students, particularly during unfavourable weather conditions. The temporary outdoor setup raises concerns about the quality of education and the overall learning environment for the students during this transitional period.

Education officials have not yet provided a timeline for the completion of new school buildings. The situation highlights infrastructure challenges in some government educational institutions across Tamil Nadu, where modernisation projects sometimes create temporary disruptions in academic activities.
