A disagreement has emerged between wildlife veterinary officials over claims that a colleague has resigned from his post at a state veterinary office. The dispute centres on allegations that remain unclear amid conflicting statements from the parties involved.

Dr Nihal Pushpakumara, President of the Association of Wildlife and Zoo Veterinary Officers, has stated that Dr Isuru Hewahettige, who works at the Nikaweratiya Veterinary Office, has submitted a letter of resignation. However, Dr Hewahettige has reportedly denied being aware of any such resignation, contradicting Pushpakumara's claims.
The nature of allegations against Dr Hewahettige has not been fully detailed, though the dispute appears to involve professional or technical disagreements within the veterinary sector. Pushpakumara made additional comments regarding elephant biology, noting that elephants with tusks are not immortal and eventually die after reaching a certain age, though the connection to the resignation matter remains unclear.
The incident highlights tensions within Sri Lanka's wildlife veterinary community, with competing statements from senior officials suggesting a deeper professional dispute. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement clarifying the status of Dr Hewahettige's employment or the specific allegations at the centre of the controversy.
Neither official could immediately be reached for further comment to clarify the conflicting accounts or the precise reasons behind the dispute.
