The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has clarified it has not issued any guidelines regarding food consumption during Durga Puja, dismissing reports that circulated on social media. The organisation stressed it does not function as a religious authority issuing religious edicts.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday moved to address reports suggesting it had issued directives on consuming 'satvik' or vegetarian food during Durga Puja festivities. A senior VHP functionary stated the organisation had issued no such directive and cautioned against misinformation circulating on digital platforms regarding the matter.
"We wish to clarify that we have issued no such directive. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad does not issue fatwas," the VHP leader said in response to the viral reports. The clarification comes as reports claimed the organisation had recommended adherents follow specific dietary guidelines during the nine-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga.
The denial underscores growing concerns about unverified claims spreading through social media during major religious festivals in India. The VHP, a Hindu nationalist organisation with considerable influence in religious matters, has previously been at the centre of various controversies involving cultural and social directives.
Durga Puja, one of the most significant festivals in the Hindu calendar, is celebrated with considerable enthusiasm across India and among diaspora communities worldwide. The festival typically sees elaborate celebrations featuring food, rituals, and community gatherings that vary by region and household tradition.
