Vietnam accelerates market reforms after FTSE Russell upgrade

Vietnam's capital markets have expanded dramatically, with the stock exchange capitalisation reaching 10.3 quadrillion VND ($398.2 billion USD) as of September 30, 2026, representing 80.2% of the nation's estimated 2025 GDP. The milestone underscores the market's growing significance to Vietnam's economy and reflects sustained investor confidence in the country's financial sector.

Investor participation has accelerated beyond official projections, with the number of active investor accounts climbing to nearly 14.1 million by end-September 2026, equivalent to 13.8% of the population. This surge significantly outpaces the government's target of 11 million accounts by 2030, suggesting growing retail and institutional interest in equity investments across the country.

The rapid expansion follows Vietnam's inclusion in the FTSE Russell emerging markets index, a development that has prompted policymakers to implement a range of structural improvements. These measures aim to enhance market quality, broaden product offerings, and strengthen the regulatory framework governing Vietnam's exchanges.

Government officials have indicated plans to introduce new investment platforms and expand market connectivity with regional counterparts. Deputy Minister-level officials have outlined initiatives to improve transparency, expand derivative products, and streamline trading mechanisms to accommodate growing demand from both domestic and foreign investors.

Market analysts attribute the expansion to a combination of factors, including economic growth, rising middle-class investment participation, and Vietnam's attractiveness as an emerging market alternative amid global economic diversification trends.
