Vietnam and the four-member European Free Trade Association (EFTA) have finalized a free trade agreement following 14 years of negotiations, marking a significant expansion of economic ties between Southeast Asia and Western Europe. The accord brings together Vietnam with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein in a comprehensive trade framework aimed at reducing tariffs and facilitating cross-border commerce.

The agreement is positioned to generate substantial benefits for Vietnamese exporters and investors seeking access to EFTA markets, while also opening doors for European firms to tap into Vietnam's growing economy. EFTA officials have signaled expectations that bilateral trade and investment flows will increase markedly under the new framework.

A key advantage for Vietnam lies in gaining access to advanced manufacturing technologies and expertise from EFTA member states, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, machinery and precision engineering. The pact is expected to facilitate technology transfer and enable Vietnamese enterprises to upgrade their production capabilities and competitiveness in global markets.

The free trade agreement represents a broader strategic move by Vietnam to diversify its economic partnerships beyond traditional trading partners. With the accord now in effect, Vietnamese businesses and policymakers are examining concrete steps to capitalize on the new opportunities in European markets while managing any competitive pressures from imported goods.
