A high-level Vietnamese delegation has proposed that Finland play an expanded role as a bridge between Vietnam and the European Union, while positioning Vietnam to serve similar functions connecting Finland with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Politburo Member Trinh Van, head of the Communist Party's central publicity commission, outlined the framework during recent discussions aimed at elevating bilateral relations.

The proposed partnership encompasses economic and trade initiatives, with Vietnamese officials emphasizing the need for fuller implementation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). Officials also urged Finland to encourage remaining European Union member states to expedite ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), a move seen as critical to strengthening commercial ties between Vietnam and the bloc.

Cooperation initiatives under discussion include infrastructure development and smart city technology projects, areas where both nations see potential for mutual benefit. The expanded agenda reflects broader efforts by Vietnam to diversify its partnerships and strengthen connections with European nations amid evolving regional dynamics.

The discussions underscore Vietnam's strategy of positioning itself as a regional hub while seeking deeper integration with major economic blocs, including through key bilateral relationships with individual EU member states.
