Indonesia remains Vietnam's second-largest trading partner within ASEAN, underscoring the strategic importance of their bilateral relationship. Trade between the two countries reached 17.2 billion USD in 2025, reflecting robust economic ties that continue to expand. Early 2026 figures showed trade turnover approaching 13 billion USD in just the first eight months, indicating sustained momentum in commercial exchanges.
Vietnam's participation in recent trade fairs in Indonesia has highlighted the breadth of bilateral economic engagement. The country has showcased its halal-certified product offerings, tapping into Indonesia's substantial Muslim consumer market and demonstrating Vietnam's growing competitiveness in specialized export sectors. This initiative reflects both nations' commitment to diversifying their trade portfolio beyond traditional goods.
Defense and security cooperation has emerged as another pillar of the strengthening relationship. Vietnam's involvement in multinational defense exercises hosted by Indonesia, including participation in the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting-Plus (ADMM+) drills, signals deepening military-to-military engagement and shared commitment to regional stability.
Broad efforts to upgrade the Vietnam-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership indicate ambitions to elevate the relationship beyond trade and defense. Officials from both nations are exploring mechanisms to enhance cooperation across diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people dimensions. These initiatives position the bilateral partnership as increasingly central to both countries' regional strategies and reflect their mutual interest in strengthening ASEAN cohesion.
