Vietnamese agricultural investment in Laos has reached a significant scale, with 208 companies now engaged in farming, forestry and animal husbandry ventures across the country. These enterprises have channelled approximately $1.4 billion in registered capital into the sector, cementing Vietnam's role as a major economic partner in Laos's rural development.
The expansion of agricultural ties reflects broader cooperation between Hanoi and Vientiane to unlock economic potential along their shared border. Both governments have prioritised upgrading transport and energy infrastructure to facilitate the movement of goods and reduce operational costs for businesses operating across the region.
The agricultural investment drive aligns with an ambitious bilateral trade target, with Vietnam and Laos aiming to achieve $10 billion in annual commerce by 2030. To realise this goal, officials in both capitals are actively pursuing additional foreign direct investment and streamlining regulatory frameworks to attract more enterprises to the Laotian market.
The deepening economic engagement underscores the strategic importance of the Vietnam-Laos relationship, which extends beyond agriculture into manufacturing, mining and infrastructure development. As both countries navigate regional economic shifts, their collaborative approach to development offers a model for mutually beneficial cross-border partnership.
