Vietnam and Singapore pilot digital ID system to test ASEAN integration

The two nations have embarked on a high-technology collaboration to create a seamless digital identity framework that could serve as a model for regional cooperation. The Vietnam-Singapore digital ID link aims to reduce bureaucratic barriers and simplify processes for citizens and businesses moving between the countries.

The project addresses a key challenge facing ASEAN member states: establishing compatible digital infrastructure that respects national sovereignty while enabling efficient cross-border movement and services. By testing interoperability standards through this bilateral initiative, Vietnam and Singapore are laying groundwork that could eventually benefit the broader 10-member bloc.

The digital identification system is expected to expedite visa processing, customs clearance, and other administrative formalities for travelers and traders. It also reflects broader efforts by the two countries to deepen their partnership, which has extended to personnel training programs and expanded trade relations.

Vietnam-Singapore economic ties have strengthened significantly, with bilateral trade growing 46.8 percent in the first nine months of this year. Beyond commercial cooperation, the nations have reinforced collaboration through Party-to-Party channels, signaling commitment to comprehensive strategic engagement.
