Vietnam's Ambassador to Australia, Pham Hung Tam, engaged with Australian government representatives, academic researchers and industry executives during the International Mining and Resources Conference and Exhibition 2026 (IMARC 2026) held in Sydney from October 27-29. The high-level meetings focused on expanding cooperation across energy security, critical minerals sourcing and mining technology innovation.
The discussions underscore a strategic shift toward practical partnership between the two countries. A supplementary agreement governing Vietnam-Australia energy cooperation was signed during the engagement, marking formal progress on initiatives that extend beyond diplomatic dialogue into tangible commercial and technical collaboration.
Critical minerals have emerged as a key focus area for both nations. Vietnam seeks to secure supply chains for materials essential to clean energy transitions and advanced manufacturing, while Australia aims to position itself as a reliable supplier to Asian markets. Enhanced cooperation in mining technology and sustainable extraction methods formed additional pillars of the talks.
The engagement reflects broader momentum in Southeast Asia-Pacific regional alignment on energy security and resource development. Industry participants noted that combined Vietnamese-Australian expertise could address regional demand for both conventional and renewable energy infrastructure, positioning both nations favorably within Asia-Pacific supply networks.
