Vietnam banking sector pushes digital innovation despite financing gaps

Vietnam's banking sector is advancing its digital transformation agenda, though constraints on innovation financing remain a significant hurdle, according to State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) Deputy Governor Pham Tien Dung.

The banking system has made initial strides in adopting digital technologies and modernizing operations, contributing to broader efforts to develop a cashless economy. However, Dung emphasized that the current level of financial support for innovation initiatives falls short of sector needs and national development goals.

The SBV has prioritized digital transformation as a key pillar in the banking sector's 2026-2030 development strategy. Industry observers note that expanding access to innovation financing could accelerate adoption of new payment systems, fintech solutions, and digital banking services across Vietnam's financial institutions.

Experts argue that addressing the financing gap will require coordinated efforts between regulators, commercial banks, and government agencies to unlock capital for technology investments. The sector's ability to overcome these constraints is seen as critical to Vietnam's broader digital economy objectives and financial inclusion targets in the coming years.
