Vietnam's Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung has proposed strengthening connectivity and cooperation within the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) mechanism, emphasizing the need for a more resilient and innovative approach to regional development. The remarks signal Hanoi's commitment to deepening ties among the six riparian nations that share the strategically important Mekong River corridor.
In his proposals, Minister Trung highlighted the importance of enhanced regional connectivity as a foundation for addressing contemporary challenges facing the Mekong-Lancang region. He called for improved coordination between the MLC and other existing regional cooperation frameworks to maximize synergies and avoid duplicative efforts across multiple multilateral platforms.
The Foreign Minister also stressed the need for greater collaboration on non-traditional security issues, ranging from climate change and natural disaster management to transnational crime and public health threats. These challenges, he suggested, require coordinated responses that transcend conventional diplomatic channels and involve multiple stakeholder groups.
Central to Vietnam's vision for the partnership is a people-centered approach to development. Minister Trung emphasized that regional cooperation mechanisms must prioritize the needs and well-being of communities across the Mekong-Lancang basin, ensuring that economic growth and connectivity initiatives benefit ordinary citizens alongside governments and businesses.
The MLC, which includes Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, has emerged as an important platform for addressing shared regional concerns. Vietnam's renewed focus on the mechanism reflects broader efforts to strengthen Southeast Asian unity and develop practical solutions to cross-border issues affecting the subregion.
