Vietnam and EFTA member states—comprising Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein—have sealed a comprehensive free trade agreement that promises to deepen economic ties between Southeast Asia and Western Europe. The conclusion of talks, which spanned 14 years, marks a milestone in deepening relations between the two trading blocs.

Vietnamese exporters stand to gain from improved market access for their core products. The country's shipments to EFTA markets currently center on seafood, footwear, textiles and garments, alongside machinery, electronics and components. The agreement is anticipated to facilitate growth in these traditional export sectors while potentially opening doors to new opportunities.

For Vietnamese importers, the agreement promises enhanced access to EFTA's specialized offerings. Swiss, Norwegian and other EFTA suppliers have traditionally provided Vietnam with high-value imports including industrial machinery, equipment, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and specialized production materials—inputs critical to Vietnam's manufacturing sectors.

The trade pact was highlighted at the Swiss-Viet Economic Forum 2026, where Swiss leadership underscored its significance for bilateral cooperation. Norwegian and Swiss ambassadors have characterized the deal as ushering in a new phase of commercial partnership between Vietnam and the EFTA bloc. Trade analysts expect the agreement to generate measurable increases in two-way commerce over coming years.
