Vietnam, EFTA seal free trade agreement after 14-year negotiation

The Vietnam-EFTA Free Trade Agreement represents the culmination of more than a decade of diplomatic and commercial negotiations between Hanoi and the four-member EFTA bloc, which comprises Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

The agreement is designed to eliminate or significantly reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers across multiple sectors, creating expanded market access for Vietnamese exporters and EFTA-based businesses. Observers note that Vietnamese seafood producers, a major export sector, stand to benefit substantially from improved market access across EFTA nations.

Beyond trade flows, officials expect the accord to foster deeper cooperation in innovation, sustainable development and economic growth. The pact aims to create a more predictable business environment for companies operating across Vietnam and EFTA territories.

The agreement is expected to undergo formal signing procedures in the coming period, followed by domestic ratification processes in Vietnam and the respective EFTA member states. Once implemented, it will join Vietnam's expanding network of bilateral and regional trade partnerships.
