Vietnam has officially established the leadership structure of its National Steering Committee for Search, Collection and Identification of Martyrs' Remains under a newly signed decision. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra assumes the role of committee chairman, while Deputy Minister of National Defence Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Gau and Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Nguyen Thi Ha serve as deputy heads.
The committee's formation reflects Vietnam's ongoing commitment to accounting for war casualties from decades of conflict. The establishment of clear leadership and institutional structure underscores the government's prioritization of this humanitarian mission involving multiple agencies.
Recent efforts to identify remains have gained momentum through various initiatives. Dien Bien province has collected 81 DNA samples to aid in identifying war martyrs, while Vietnam and the United States have intensified technological cooperation in the search for remains. Military aircraft have been deployed to transport skeletal remains and samples to Hanoi, where they undergo DNA identification procedures.
The systematic approach reflects both national efforts and international partnerships aimed at bringing closure to families of fallen soldiers and ensuring proper recognition of those who died in service to the nation.
