Vietnam honours Ho Chi Minh legacy with expanded UN peacekeeping role

Vietnam's peacekeeping contingent has honoured President Ho Chi Minh during a ceremony marking the country's expanding role in United Nations peacekeeping operations. The tribute underscores Vietnam's commitment to using military deployments abroad as a tool for advancing both security and diplomatic interests in the region and globally.

Major General Pham Manh Thang, Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, stated that Vietnam views UN peacekeeping participation as more than a defence diplomacy function. He characterized it as a political responsibility that reflects the Communist Party, State and military's overarching foreign policy framework centred on peace, independence, self-reliance and proactive international engagement.

The expanded peacekeeping efforts include promotions for four additional military officers assigned to UN missions, while an engineering unit rotation has been dispatched to the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The deployments demonstrate Vietnam's willingness to contribute personnel and resources to multilateral peace support operations.

Vietnam's growing participation in UN peacekeeping operations represents a significant shift in the country's international military engagement. The initiatives align with Hanoi's broader strategy of strengthening ties with major powers and regional partners while maintaining its independence in foreign policy decision-making.
