Vietnam, Laos elevate partnership with investment push, defence accord

Vietnam and Laos have signalled renewed commitment to their strategic partnership, with senior officials pledging to tackle longstanding obstacles to closer economic integration. At the 2026 Investment Promotion Conference held in the Lao capital, the two prime ministers engaged directly with business leaders and investors from both nations to discuss ways to streamline institutional frameworks, simplify administrative procedures, and upgrade transport links.

Among the priorities identified were addressing bottlenecks in cross-border payment systems and infrastructure development, which officials said were constraining bilateral commerce. The two governments set an ambitious target of lifting two-way trade to $10 billion by 2030, up from current levels, according to statements issued after the talks.

Beyond economic matters, Vietnam and Laos also reinforced their defence relationship. The countries agreed on a comprehensive cooperation plan for 2027, underscoring the military dimension of their special relationship. Officials characterized the visits and dialogues as generating fresh momentum for regional development that would benefit Cambodia as well.

The renewed focus on removing trade frictions reflects broader efforts by both nations to deepen economic interdependence while maintaining their historically close political ties. Observers noted that improved transport connectivity and simplified business procedures could unlock significant untapped potential in regional commerce.
