Vietnam launches 2026 Action Month to advance elderly care policies

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra opened the initiative in Hai Phong, calling for elderly-focused policies to be woven into Vietnam's socio-economic development, social security, and quality-of-life frameworks. Officials stressed that long-term planning must begin now to safeguard future generations' wellbeing in their later years.

The government has announced several concrete measures to support its aging population. Beginning in 2026, elderly Vietnamese will receive free annual health check-ups as part of expanded preventive healthcare initiatives. Additionally, redundant public facilities are being repurposed as daytime care centres, offering seniors accessible community spaces for activities and social engagement.

Policymakers are also exploring Vietnam's emerging "silver economy," which leverages the skills, experience, and consumer spending of older citizens as an economic resource. This approach recognizes elderly populations not merely as beneficiaries of care but as active contributors to national development.

The campaign reflects Vietnam's growing focus on demographic challenges as the country's population ages. By integrating elderly welfare into broader policy frameworks and developing infrastructure tailored to seniors' needs, officials aim to create a sustainable model for supporting one of Asia's fastest-aging societies.
