Vietnam must strengthen safeguards against property auction fraud

National Assembly President Tran Thanh Man has urged legislators to implement tougher enforcement mechanisms against auction fraud, citing persistent problems with collusive bidding practices in Vietnam's property sector. Speaking during the 16th legislature's second session in Hanoi on October 19, Man highlighted the need for comprehensive safeguards to combat widespread irregularities that undermine fair competition in asset sales.

The call comes as lawmakers examine a draft revision of the Law on Property Auction, which aims to address multiple vulnerabilities in the current system. Key concerns include collusion between bidders, fraudulent bidding schemes, the use of sham participants to artificially inflate prices, and last-minute bid withdrawals that destabilize transactions.

Proposed amendments seek to strengthen oversight mechanisms and close procedural gaps that enable misconduct. The revision represents part of broader efforts by Vietnam's legislature to enhance transparency and efficiency in asset auction processes while protecting legitimate market participants.

The National Assembly is expected to continue deliberations on the draft law as it moves through the legislative review process, with lawmakers weighing the need for stricter regulations against concerns about maintaining accessibility and procedural efficiency in property auctions.
