Vietnam proposes extended seven-day Lunar New Year break for 2027

The Ministry of Home Affairs has put forward a proposal to grant civil servants and public employees a seven-day Lunar New Year holiday in 2027, spanning February 4 to 10. The extended break would provide an additional day beyond the standard Tet observance period, allowing workers in the public sector more time to celebrate Vietnam's most significant cultural festival with their families.

The proposal requires formal approval from the Vietnamese government before implementation. If greenlit, the extended holiday would apply across the civil service and state-sector workforce, affecting a substantial portion of Vietnam's employee base.

Tet, or Lunar New Year, remains the most important festival in Vietnam's cultural calendar, traditionally marking the beginning of spring and a new year in the lunar calendar. The occasion typically sees widespread travel as millions of workers and students return to their home provinces, placing considerable strain on transportation networks and public services.

Extended Tet holidays have been implemented in previous years to accommodate the scale of domestic travel and cultural observances. The proposed 2027 arrangement would follow similar patterns of past years, enabling greater flexibility for public sector personnel during the festive season.
