Vietnam pushes for stronger global dialogue on arms control, disarmament

Vietnam has reiterated its commitment to strengthening global efforts on disarmament and arms control, highlighting several priority areas for international cooperation. Deputy Prime Minister Phan Van Giang received UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs in Hanoi, where both sides discussed mechanisms for advancing practical measures on weapons regulation and nuclear non-proliferation.

During the meeting, Vietnamese officials emphasized the urgency of addressing small arms and light weapons proliferation, a persistent challenge affecting regional stability. Vietnam also stressed the importance of comprehensive international action to manage the legacy of landmines and explosive remnants of war, issues that continue to affect civilians across multiple countries in Southeast Asia.

Beyond traditional disarmament concerns, Vietnam called for expanded multilateral dialogue on emerging security threats. The country highlighted the need for coordinated international governance frameworks covering artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the development of advanced technologies that could pose risks to global security and stability.

Vietnam also advocated for maintaining outer space as a domain reserved exclusively for peaceful purposes, warning against the militarization of space exploration. The discussions reflected Vietnam's broader commitment to supporting multilateral frameworks that promote international peace and security while advancing responsible global governance.
