Vietnam's aviation sector is experiencing robust expansion as the country strengthens its position as Southeast Asia's second-largest aviation market. The Civil Aviation Authority has forecast that passenger traffic will climb to 94 million in 2026, representing a 13 percent increase from 2025 levels, while cargo handling capacity is expected to grow 9.3 percent to exceed 1.6 million tonnes.
The growth trajectory reflects intensifying competition within the industry, as new carriers continue to enter the Vietnamese market despite mounting cost pressures. This competitive environment is spurring established and emerging airlines to expand their international route networks and enhance service offerings to capture market share.
Regional cooperation is also driving sector development. Can Tho has emerged as a focal point for aviation advancement, with the city expanding collaboration with South Korea on aviation technology transfer and human resource development initiatives. These partnerships are expected to bolster operational capabilities and workforce expertise across Vietnam's aviation industry.
Industry analysts attribute the projected expansion to rising middle-class incomes, increased business travel, and growing e-commerce demand for air cargo services throughout the region. The combination of domestic market growth and enhanced international connectivity positions Vietnam's aviation sector for sustained development through the remainder of the decade.
