The State Bank of Vietnam set the official daily reference exchange rate at 25,639 VND/USD on October 20, up 4 VND from October 19's closing level. The movement reflects ongoing volatility in Vietnam's foreign exchange market as the central bank manages the dong's value through its daily fixing mechanism.
The latest adjustment comes after a week of mixed movements in the reference rate. Earlier in the week, the rate had declined, including a 5-dong drop on October 16 and a 4-dong decline on October 15, signaling downward pressure on the currency. The beginning of the week had also seen the rate fall by 4 VND.
The reference exchange rate serves as the official benchmark for daily forex transactions in Vietnam's banking system and helps guide the broader foreign exchange market. Daily movements in the rate remain modest, typically ranging from 4 to 6 dong, reflecting the central bank's efforts to maintain stability while allowing the currency to adjust to underlying market conditions.
Market analysts attribute recent exchange rate movements to shifts in capital flows and regional currency dynamics. Vietnam's manufacturing sector and export competitiveness remain sensitive to forex fluctuations, making the State Bank's daily rate-setting a closely watched indicator for businesses and investors.
