Vietnam's external trade performance has accelerated substantially this year, with combined import-export activity reaching approximately 888 billion USD during the January-September period. The 30.4% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2025 demonstrates the country's growing competitiveness in international markets, even as businesses navigate ongoing technical barriers and heightened competition from regional peers.
Analysts attribute the strong performance to two key factors: a shift toward higher-value export products and Vietnamese enterprises' increasingly sophisticated use of preferential trade agreements. These frameworks have enabled manufacturers and exporters to reduce tariff burdens and gain better market access across multiple trading partners, broadening commercial opportunities beyond traditional destinations.
The momentum extends to specific sectors showing particular promise. Vietnam's seafood industry, a traditional export pillar, is positioned to accelerate shipments during the final quarter, capitalizing on seasonal demand and favorable pricing conditions. Industry observers suggest year-end performance could further strengthen overall trade figures if current trajectories hold.
Recent developments underscore the country's commitment to deepening trade ties. Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association recently finalized negotiations on a bilateral free trade agreement after 14 years of discussions, signaling expanding European market access. These structural improvements to Vietnam's trading environment are expected to support continued export dynamism into 2027.
